Bubbaroo Platinum Range

New parents often ask us many questions about our Bubbaroo Baby Sleeping Bags. So here we list our most frequently asked questions (FAQ) and the answers.

What is a Baby Sleeping Bag?

A baby sleeping bag is a safe way to help baby sleep without the use of blankets, doonas and other loose covers that could suffocate your baby.  RedNose (formerly know as SIDS and Kids) recommends that babies be put to sleep on their back and are dressed comfortably, not too hot and not too cold. Babies manage heat loss very efficiently when placed on the back to sleep with the head uncovered. Synthetic fabrics can trap moisture (and therefore heat) which can contribute to overheating and increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Bubbaroo Baby Sleeping Bags have no covered arms, allowing baby to regulate their temperature more easily.

Why Are Natural Fabrics Better for Baby Sleeping Bags?

Bubbaroo Platinum Baby Sleeping Bags are made of 100% organic cotton and the 1.5 and 2.5 TOG merino wool bags are padded with Australian merino wool. Wool is a natural insulator that helps to keep baby not too hot and not too cold – just right. When you’re cold the wool fibres trap air creating an insulating layer but when you begin to perspire wool helps you cool down by drawing moisture away from your skin helping you cool naturally. Synthetic fibres tend to trap this warm moisture creating a humid environment which in turn causes your body temperature to rise further!

Since babies control their body temperature predominantly through their head and face, this makes a baby sleeping bag the natural choice for bedding. You should always check that baby is not too hot or too cold by placing your hand on their chest or back of the neck to check their temperature.

How Long is a Bubbaroo Sleeping Bag?

Bubbaroo Baby Sleeping Bags have extra room at the bottom, making them the longest on the market.

What Size Sleeping Bag Should I Buy?

Your first consideration should always be about the safety of your baby. It is really important that the sleeping bag fits your baby well right now! If it does not fit properly then baby might not be safe. Do not buy something that is not designed for your baby’s current weight. Bubbaroo Baby Sleeping Bags are designed to fit a little more snugly around the top so that baby cannot slip through it nor the sleep bag creep up over baby’s face. It should not be too tight around baby’s chest or neck – we have a V-neck design specifically for your baby’s comfort.  Who wants to sleep in anything too tight around your neck?  Our neck openings are sized in accordance with BS 8510 Safety of Children’s Sleep Bags.

There should be enough room at the bottom of the bag for baby to stretch and kick their legs.  Bubbaroo Baby Sleeping Bags have extra room at the bottom, making them the longest on the market. This is perfectly safe so long as the top of the sleeping bag fits well.  If your baby is growing quickly, you will find that the generous leg room gives our sleeping bags that extra mileage that all parents love!

How to measure your baby or toddler

You can measure your baby or toddler from their shoulder to their heel to see what length and size baby sleeping bag would suit them best. Remember that the neck is outside of the baby sleeping bag so do not include baby’s neck and head in your measurement.  We have had many parents realise how long our sleeping bags really are and they don’t need to go up a size at all.

How Do I Dress My Baby Underneath the Sleeping Bag?

The Bubbaroo “What To Wear” guide that comes with all of our Baby Sleeping Bags will help make dressing baby a breeze. Simply follow the suggested clothing to wear underneath the baby sleeping bag by using the temperature as a guide. You can vary the clothing as needed to get baby ready for bed.  Bubbaroo always recommends that use natural fibres for your clothing as well as your sleeping bag. Natural fibres help give baby a better quality sleep.

Bubbaroo What To Wear Guide

What your baby wears under their Platinum Joey Swag baby sleeping bag will depend on the TOG/warmth rating of the Sleeping Bag and the temperature of your baby’s room. I just the same way as you would adjust your nightclothes and the number of blankets. As a guide, please refer to the table below which provides suggestions of what to wear with the Platinum Joey Swag. Please bear in mind that all babies are different and, just as with blankets and sheets, you will learn what your baby is most comfortable wearing. Once asleep, check baby’s temperature by placing a hand on baby’s chest to ensure they’re comfortably warm and not too hot.  Your babies’ hands and feet are often too cold and are not indicative of your baby’s core temperature.

It is important to check your room temperature also. Some homes are cool and others are a little warmer. Red Nose recommends to dress your baby as you would dress yourself. Do not overheat your baby thinking that it will keep them asleep. Baby will get a better quality sleep if they are not too hot.

How Many Sleeping Bags do I need for my baby?

We recommend investing in at least 2 sleeping bags for your baby.
This could mean investing in 2 different weights so that you get year round use. Your choice will depending on the weather where you live and the temperature of your baby’s room. We suggest 2 so that you can have one in the wash and one in use, particularly in cooler climates or during winter when it will take longer for a sleeping bag to dry after washing.

What is a TOG Rating?

A TOG (Thermal Overall Grade) rating is a measure of thermal resistance. Synthetics fabrics can have a fixed thermal value, but natural products have more variation in TOG. Bubbaroo has 3 types of TOG rated baby sleeping bags.

0.5 TOG suits hot summer weather and heatwaves with room temperatures around 24-27 degrees. The O.5 TOG sleeping bag is a single layer of beautiful, organic 500 thread count cotton sateen.

1.5 TOG is best suited to summer nights and daytime naps with the average room temperature  of around 20-23 degrees. The 1.5 TOG consists of 500 thread count organic cotton sateen and is padded with Australian Wool carrying the Woolmark logo.

2.5 TOG is suitable for standard temperatures of between 10-20 degrees and can be used year round. The 2.5 TOG is also made of organic 500 thread count cotton sateen and is padded with Australian Wool carrying the Woolmark logo.

What About Wool TOGs?

Did you know that wool has an adaptable TOG rating? Wool can provide natural insulation, keeping baby cool in summer and warm in winter. Wool fibres adapt to keep baby’s temperature steady, making it a natural way to keep baby’s temperature just right!

The TOG rating of our 1.5 and 2.5TOG Platinum Joey Swag baby sleeping bags does vary according to the temperature.  The warmer your baby gets the more the 1.5TOG or 2.5TOG Platinum Joey Swag baby sleeping bag will help them cool and the colder your little one gets the more it will insulate and keep the heat in  – it’s the ideal way to keep a steady temperature assuring a peaceful night’s rest for your little one!

Wool is also naturally fire retardant. Cotton is also natural and breathable – helping baby to sleep comfortably. Always check the fabric that is on the inside layer of your baby sleeping bag. Natural insulators are best.

This chart gives a quick glance of what TOG suits variable room temperatures and seasonal changes.

Why A Front Zip?

We often get asked whether the front zip gets in the way when baby is asleep. Parents will generally say that the front zipper is much easier to use, especially if you are doing a nappy change in dim light or you have a very wriggly baby! Our double zip is designed so that once it is zipped up, you simply slide both zipper pullers all the way down to the bottom of the sleeping bag. When the zipper pullers are at baby’s feet, they will not affect baby at all. An older baby is less likely to play with them when they are out of view also.
