Which Baby Sleeping Bag is best for my baby?

Weighing up all the baby sleeping bag options can be hard. So many choices but which one is right for my baby? Once your baby is able to roll, you should no longer be swaddling your baby. It’s time to move onto a Baby Sleeping Bag to keep baby warm and safe all night. Choosing a good quality, natural sleeping bag for your baby’s sleep conditions is a big decision!

What Factors to Consider?

There are many factors that you should take into consideration when choosing the right bag for your child. The main points are:

  • Size
  • TOG rating/Warmth
  • Fabric composition and filling
  • What to wear with the Baby Sleeping Bag
  • Travel options

Bubbaroo has a number of 100% natural options to choose from in our range called Joey Swag baby sleeping bags. We’ll help you narrow down the options to the baby sleeping bag that will suit your baby’s needs best.

What Size Baby Sleeping Bag?

The most important factor when choosing a baby sleeping bag is size. The wrong size can mean that the baby is not safe. Sleeping bags are designed to fit more snugly at the top so that the baby can’t slip down.  Safety should always be your first consideration. If the baby sleeping bag is too big, your baby may slide around inside it or slip down inside the neck. If the sleeping bag is too small then it could be too tight around baby’s neck or they won’t have enough room to stretch their legs. Wool padded baby sleeping bag

Bubbaroo’s Platinum Joey Swag baby sleeping bags are available in 0-6 months, 6-18 months and 18-36 months and are the longest on the market so you will get great use out of them even if your baby grows quickly.  Always measure your child from shoulder to feet since their neck and head will be outside of the baby sleeping bag!

Warmth Rating (TOG Weight)

TOG ratings can confuse many parents. TOG ratings were invented in the 1940s along with man-made fabrics and fibres as a measure of thermal resistance. Synthetics will provide a specific thermal value. However, wool fibres are far too clever for one single warmth rating when it comes to insulation. Wool evolved to keep sheep cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s not! Sheep don’t just get hotter and hotter as their wool grows thicker and thicker. Wool fibres are naturally adapted to keeping us at a steady temperature – a perfect natural alternative to for your baby’s bedding!

We have TOG rated our 1.5 and 2.5TOG Platinum Joey Swag baby sleeping bags but the TOG value will vary depending on temperature.  The warmer your baby gets the more the 1.5TOG or 2.5TOG Platinum Joey Swag baby sleeping bag will help them cool and the colder your little one gets the more it will insulate and keep the heat in – it’s the ideal way to keep a steady temperature assuring a peaceful night’s rest for your little one!

We offer 3 types of TOG ratings for seasonal changes and variable room temperatures.

Bubbaroo Sleeping Bag TOG Guide:

0.5 TOG is best for a hot summer weather and heatwaves with room temperatures around 24-27 degrees. The O.5 TOG sleeping bag is a single layer of luxurious, organic 500 thread count cotton sateen.

1.5 TOG is suitable for summer nights and daytime naps with room temperatures of around 20-23 degrees. The 1.5 TOG is made of organic 500 thread count cotton sateen and is padded with Australian Wool carrying the Woolmark logo.

2.5 TOG is good for all year round and standard temperatures of between 10-20 degrees. The 2.5 TOG is made of organic 500 thread count cotton sateen and is padded with Australian Wool carrying the Woolmark logo.

Always check the temperature of your baby’s room – is your house pretty cool or does it get a little warmer. Red Nose recommends to dress baby as you would yourself, not too hot, not too cold. Since babies control their body temperature predominantly through their head and face, this makes a baby sleeping bag the natural choice for bedding. You should always check that baby is not too hot or too cold by placing your hand on their chest or back of the neck to check their temperature.

What to Wear

Our Bubbaroo What To Wear guide makes dressing baby easy. Simply follow the suggested clothing to wear underneath the sleeping bag. Bubbaroo makes it easy to get baby ready for bed.  We recommend that natural fibres are used to dress your little one.

Fabric

Bubbaroo Platinum Baby Sleeping Bags are made of 100% organic cotton and the 1.5 and 2.5 TOG merino wool bags are padded with Australian merino wool. Wool is a natural insulator that helps to keep baby not too hot and not too cold – just right. When you’re cold the wool fibres trap air creating an insulating layer but when you begin to perspire wool helps you cool down by drawing moisture away from your skin helping you cool naturally. Synthetic fibres tend to trap this warm moisture creating a humid environment which in turn causes your body temperature to rise further! Wool is also naturally fire retardant. Bubbaroo offers more size options than other merino bags. Cotton is also natural and breathable – helping baby to sleep comfortably. Always check what the inside layer of your baby sleeping bag is made of.  Natural insulators are best.

What if I’m travelling?

Bubbaroo Baby Sleeping Bags are extremely versatile and can be used on the go whether you are out in the car, using the pram or travelling on holidays – Bubbaroo can go anywhere with you.  Our go anywhere travel system accommodates a 3 or 5-point harness of a car seat or pram so you don’t need to undress baby when you are on the road. In addition, our two-way opening zip gives you a quick nappy change without completely undressing baby.
