Peace of mind that your baby is safely to sleep

Baby sleeping bags are a ‘wearable blanket’!  Specifically designed so that babies stay warm and covered when they start to move around the cot in their sleep.  Baby sleeping bags addressed the SIDS concern of suffocation or overheating by becoming entangled in sheets and blankets.  Like any baby product, sleeping bags need to be scrutinized for safety risk. One thing to look for is whether the baby sleeping bag you use complies with any safety standards.  I’ve seen many other brand baby sleeping bags recalled because of serious safety concerns.  At Bubbaroo we test our Joey Swags baby sleeping bags according to mandatory as well as voluntary standards including BS 8510:2009 so that you have peace of mind that your baby is safely to sleep.

Quality safety standards for baby sleeping bags – what does this actually mean?

Product standard compliance means that the product has been submitted for independent testing and passed the requisite standard.  Compliance with product standards may not be compulsory or legally enforceable.

In Australia baby sleeping bags are considered children’s nightwear and must comply with mandatory regulations about fire hazards under AS/NZ 1249.  There is no general quality product standard in Australia so we look to the United Kingdom and United States.

British Standard BS8510:2009 Safety of Baby Sleep Bags

The British Standard BS8510:2009 Safety of Baby Sleep Bags gives us some safety standards to look out for when buying a baby sleeping bag.  BS8510 is a voluntary standard that we subject our Bubbaroo Joey Swag baby sleeping bags to.

Requirement 1 – Thermal Resistance TOG rating

Baby sleeping bags must have an accurate TOG rating/warmth rating and include relevant temperature information to avoid overheating.

Requirement 2 – Neck Openings

Neck openings must fit so baby doesn’t slip down inside the baby sleeping bag.

Requirement 4 – No harmful dyes or chemicals

Given that babies chew and put things in their mouths as a normal part of their development. As such, the dyes and chemicals used in the manufacture of the product must be safe. Our baby sleeping bags have no detectable harmful substances.

Our baby sleeping bags are 100% natural – we use organically grown cotton in our baby sleeping bags and Australian wool.  All of our products have no harmful chemicals.

Requirement 5 – BS EN 14878 Fire Safety of Children’s Nightwear

The standard provides specifications for burning behaviour in terms of flash flame and rate of flame spread.  All our 1.5TOG and 2.5TOG Joey Swag baby sleeping bags are padded with wool. As wool is a natural fire retardant there’s no need for any harmful chemicals.

Requirement 6 – No mechanical hazards to cause injury

It’s important to ensure that the parts of the sleeping bag are effectively secured for its foreseeable life to prevent choking and ingestion. This includes testing press studs, fabric embellishments and diamantes, labels, buttons, beads, pom poms, tassels and zip pullers.  Testing occurs before and after washing and drying.

It’s important that the sleeping bag doesn’t fall apart or the fastenings come undone because a child could slip down inside the sleeping bag. A sleeping bag may become unsafe if it shrinks or stretches out of shape, so we test for this too!

Requirement 7 – Product Information

The packaging of sleeping bags needs to comply to  packaging safety standards.  It’s required that the sleeping bag must be sold with comprehensive information. There are specified requirements for:
– labelling
– materials and composition
– washing/drying instructions,
– TOG value,
– age range of child it is intended to fit; and
– certain warnings.
