- Be There for Mum & Dad
Have you been invited to a Baby Shower? They have become so popular these days along with gender reveal parties. It can go either way - quite a production or a more low key event. What kind of celebration floats your boat? When I was pregnant most of my friends and family weren't hosting baby showers. These days it seems de rigueur for most mums-to-be to celebrate in some way. How do you feel about baby showers? I think if the focus is on the celebration of the happy time in the expectant parents' life, then that's worthwhile. I don't believe that the Baby Shower should be an enforced gift giving extravaganza. Here in Australia, like many things, we tend to take a more low key approach than some other countries. Most people just have an afternoon tea for friends and family, a few decorations, gorgeous food and just a celebration of the mum and the impending arrival. No gift registry in sight! Perhaps you're the Mum-to-be excitedly waiting for your new arrival or maybe you're a close friend or relative who's generously offered to host the special occasion.
Baby Shower
A baby shower is a beautiful way for friends to celebrate a mum-to-be. Usually a friend would offer to host a baby shower. Etiquette around baby showers is ever-evolving but apparently you should never host your own. Baby showers should be family/kid friendly. You can offer alcohol to the guests even though the mum-to-be should be restraining, it doesn't mean everyone else has to. A high tea option is a good call where you can offer tea and coffee to the list of beverages. It is wise not to touch the "bump" of the guest of honour. As enticing as it might be to give it a pat, not everyone likes having their personal space invaded. You can choose whether you want to open the gifts at the baby shower or afterwards. It is nice to share your gratitude with the generous gift giver. Sometimes though it can just create an awkward moment where you might have to exaggerate your gratefulness for the third set of baby bibs. It can also lead to one up man ship in the present giving stakes where guests try to out do each other. It's not nice for guests to feel uncomfortable. My suggestion...save the present opening for later and enjoy your guests company. Experts say avoid giving baby advice to the new mum. Everyone will have their own parenting style or ideal in their head of how they will parent. It could overwhelm the guest of honour if every guest offered her some well meaning (but very personal) advice. Try not to pass comment on the baby name if it is revealed. Our advice is to smile at all times your opinion isn't necessary!
Baby Q
A new phenomenon - the "baby q" or baby barbecue for both mum and dad seems to be the latest craze in this ever evolving space. The baby Q is a casual gathering in typical Aussie style - low key with a bbq for both men and women. Hosts may choose to play games like guess the due date or simply let the "parents to be" enjoy the company of their family and friends at this very happy time in their lives. The baby q is a good option to avoid the present opening debacle of the baby shower mentioned above. It also shifts the focus from the possibly nervous and self-conscious mother to both expectant parents.
Gender Reveal Parties
Finding out the sex of your baby is very exciting. Gender reveal parties have definitely become a huge thing in the US. We may find them taking off more in Australia soon. Some parents go to great lengths to keep their baby's gender a secret until the big reveal at a celebration for family and friends. Some parents don't even find out themselves until the same time that the guests do - wow! Imagine all the joy of all the guests seeing the surprise on the parents' faces. Some couples send the sex of their baby to a bakery and "reveal" the gender when they cut into the cake. Others use balloons and confetti. Honestly! There are some amazing ideas out there. Is this moment something you would like to share with your friends and family? Or would you prefer to find out privately? Or wait until the baby arrives? And you thought choosing a name was the hard part?
Nursery Design
Something else that has come a long way since my baby days is the nursery. OMG! So many beautiful and inspiring designs on Instagram. Research has shown that loud colours and designs are not conducive for baby sleep. Here at Bubbaroo, we believe in function over form and soft colours over vibrant contrasting colours for sleep. All of our baby sleep wear range is gentle and soft - no gawdy patterns here. Remember that it's all about sleep so check out our blog Baby Nursery Design for Easy Settling for more ideas. Possibly the mum to be friend has planned out the decoration of their baby's nursery and some might even have grand scheme of colour and style. If you know the mum really well then you might be able to find a baby shower gift for the nursery. Our advice is to play it safe and give a practical and functional gift that helps the baby actually sleep with gifts like a Bubbaroo Joey Swag Baby Sleeping Bag.
Gift Giving
The main thing with gift giving is to make sure you put some thought into the gift. Think carefully about the month the baby is born, the weather and whether or not the couple knows the sex of their child. Generally, gifts related to babies include sleeping bags, diapers, blankets, baby bottles, Swaddle Wraps, cot sheets, and toys.

My son Jacob was the master of escaping his swaddles so that's why I invented the Joey Pouch Swaddle Wrap. Jacob (nicknamed Houdini) could get out of the swaddle and then wake himself with his strong startle reflex. Our Joey Pouch is designed to help baby adjust to life outside the womb gently and calmly. The Joey Pouch Swaddle Wrap is made from light-weight, breathable 100% cotton waffle fabric, keeping baby covered but not at risk of overheating. Babies wrapped in the Joey Pouch Swaddle can still move their arms and hands and self-soothe by sucking on their fingers and hands through the swaddle if they wish. Arms are not pinned or forced in any fixed position.
Joey Pod Transitional Swaddle Wrap
Our Joey Pod Transitional Swaddle bags are the next stage for baby's sleep and can be used in 3 ways. Be There for Mum & Dad
Baby showers, celebrations and gift giving are lovely gestures for the arrival of a new baby. Don't forget to keep in touch with the family after the baby is born. Looking after a newborn can be really tiring. New mums need support. Transitioning to motherhood can be a very overwhelming and a little isolating. Many new parents find the transition from sociable work spaces to home life quite challenging. Dads will also need support and may find it helpful to talk to other dads about their experiences. Be a good friend. Check in on the new parents or send a message. It's helpful to let your friends know you are thinking of them and that you are on hand if any help or support is needed.
